Computer Problems
Why Won’t Windows Update?
Windows updates can sometimes take time or fail. A simple restart and a normal update check can solve some problems.
What’s happening?
Windows may delay an update because of a temporary error, low storage, a restart that is waiting to happen, or another software problem.
Common causes
- The computer needs a restart
- There is not enough free storage
- The update is still downloading or installing
- Another program or service is blocking the update
- Windows Update has a temporary error
Things you can safely try
- Save your work and restart the computer normally. Then check Windows Update again.
- Make sure the computer has a stable internet connection.
- Check that you have enough free storage for the update.
- Open the normal Windows Update settings and try the update again. Do not download an update from a random website.
- If Windows shows an error message or code, take a photo or write it down.
- If the update keeps failing, get help before making advanced changes to Windows system files.
Stop here
Do not delete system files, edit the Windows registry, or use random repair programs from the internet. Those steps can make Windows harder to repair.
