Why Is My Computer So Slow?
A slow computer is often fixable, but “slow” can mean several different things. The computer may be short on free storage or memory, busy with updates, overheating, struggling with one program, or simply reaching the limits of older hardware.
What’s happening?
A computer may become slower over time, take longer to start, or respond slowly when opening programs and files.
A slow computer does not always mean something is seriously wrong.
Common causes
- Too many programs running
- Too many browser tabs
- Low available storage
- Programs running in the background
- Software that needs updating
- Aging hardware
- Malware or other unwanted software
Things you can safely try
- Restart the computer.
- Close programs you are not using.
- Check available storage.
- Install available Windows updates.
- Notice whether one program is especially slow.
A restart can clear temporary problems and close programs that have been running for a long time.
Too many programs running at once can make the computer work harder.
If the drive is nearly full, review files you recognize and no longer need.
Updates can include security fixes and performance improvements.
If only one program has a problem, the issue may be specific to that program.
Stop here
Do not delete unfamiliar Windows files or change advanced system settings just to make the computer faster.
If the computer is still very slow after these basic steps, stop and get help.
