Why Does My Computer Keep Freezing?
A computer freeze is different from a program simply taking a few seconds to respond. If the entire computer repeatedly stops responding, the pattern can point to software problems, low resources, overheating, or failing hardware.
What’s happening?
A computer that freezes may stop responding to your mouse or keyboard, become stuck on one screen, or take a long time to respond.
A temporary freeze can happen occasionally, but repeated freezing may point to a larger problem.
Common causes
- Too many programs running
- Not enough available memory (RAM)
- Low storage space
- A problem with one program
- Software or Windows problems
- Overheating
- A failing storage drive or other hardware problem
Things you can safely try
- Give the computer a moment.
- See whether only one program is affected.
- Restart the computer normally.
- Check available storage.
- Notice when the freezing happens.
- Write down any error message you see.
Sometimes a program is simply busy and will begin responding again.
If the rest of the computer works, the problem may be with that particular program.
A normal restart can clear temporary problems.
A nearly full drive can contribute to performance problems.
Does it happen when opening a certain program, browsing the internet, or doing something else?
This can help identify the problem.
Stop here
If the computer repeatedly freezes, makes unusual noises, becomes extremely hot, or shows signs that the storage drive may be failing, stop and get help.
