Computer Problems
Why Won’t My Program Open?
If one program will not open, the problem may be with that program rather than the whole computer.
What’s happening?
Start by checking whether other programs open normally. If they do, focus on the program that is failing.
Common causes
- The program is stuck
- The computer needs a restart
- The program needs an update
- The program has a damaged setting or file
- The computer does not have enough free storage
Things you can safely try
- Try opening a different program. If other programs work, the problem may be limited to one app.
- Restart the computer normally. Then try the program again.
- Check for a normal update for the program or for your operating system.
- Make sure you have enough free storage. Very low storage can cause programs to behave badly.
- If the program shows an error message, write it down or take a photo. The exact message can help identify the problem.
- If the program still will not open, avoid deleting or changing system files. Get help before making major changes.
Stop here
Stop if an instruction tells you to edit system files, download an unknown repair tool, or turn off security features. Those steps can create a bigger problem.
