Wi-Fi & Internet
Why Is My Wi-Fi So Slow?
Slow Wi-Fi does not always mean your internet service is slow. The wireless signal may be the problem.
What’s happening?
Wi-Fi is the wireless link between your device and the router. Your internet service is the connection coming into your home. Testing more than one device can help tell the difference.
Common causes
- The device is far from the router
- Walls or other objects weaken the signal
- Many devices are using Wi-Fi at once
- The router needs a restart
- Only one device is having trouble
Things you can safely try
- Test another device in the same room. If only one device is slow, focus on that device.
- Move closer to the router and check whether the connection improves.
- Restart the router using its normal power method. Give it several minutes to reconnect.
- Pause large downloads or heavy streaming on other devices while you test the connection.
- Test the Wi-Fi in another room. A big change from room to room may point to a coverage problem.
Stop here
Do not buy an extender or change advanced router settings just because Wi-Fi is slow. First find out where the slowdown is happening.
