How Do I Restart My Router?
Restarting your router can sometimes fix temporary internet or Wi-Fi problems.
What’s happening?
Restarting your router can sometimes fix temporary internet or Wi-Fi problems.
When a restart helps
- Your router may have a temporary connection problem.
- Several devices may be having trouble at the same time.
- The router may need a normal restart after a change or outage.
A restart is different from a factory reset. **Do not press or hold the reset button unless you specifically intend to reset the router and understand what that will do.**
Things you can safely try
- Identify your router.
- Turn off or unplug the router.
If you have several networking boxes, make sure you know which one is the router. Some homes have a modem and router in separate boxes, while others have one combined device.
Use its power button if it has one, or unplug its power cable.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Turn the router back on or reconnect its power.
- Wait several minutes.
The router may need time to reconnect to your internet service.
- Test your internet connection.
Try a familiar website or app.
Stop here
Do not press the router's reset button unless you know you want to perform a factory reset.
If you are unsure which device is the router or modem, stop before unplugging equipment you don't recognize.
