Wi-Fi & Internet
Why Does My Wi-Fi Keep Disconnecting?
Wi-Fi that drops over and over can come from one device, a weak signal, the router, or the internet service.
What’s happening?
First check whether every device loses the connection. If only one device disconnects, start there. If everything drops, look at the home network.
Common causes
- A weak Wi-Fi signal
- A router or modem that needs a restart
- Wireless interference
- A problem with one device's saved network settings
- An internet-service problem
Things you can safely try
- When the connection drops, check another phone, computer, or tablet. This tells you whether the problem affects the whole home.
- If everything is offline, restart the router and modem using their normal power method. Give them several minutes to reconnect.
- Move the affected device closer to the router. If the connection becomes stable, Wi-Fi coverage may be the issue.
- If only one device has trouble, forget the Wi-Fi network on that device and reconnect with the current password.
- Notice whether the problem happens at a certain time or in one room. This can help show a pattern.
Stop here
Avoid changing advanced router settings unless you know what they do. If every device keeps disconnecting after a normal restart, the router, modem, or internet service may need further help.
