Wi-Fi & Internet

Slow internet and slow Wi-Fi are related, but they are not always the same problem. Your internet service comes from your provider, while Wi-Fi is the wireless internet connection between your router and your device. Knowing which part is slow can save a lot of frustration.

What’s happening?

Slow internet can come from the internet internet connection, the router or modem, Wi-Fi conditions, or one particular device. Comparing more than one device is one of the quickest ways to narrow down where the problem is.

Common causes

  • A problem with your internet provider
  • A busy or overloaded home network
  • A router that needs a restart
  • A weak Wi-Fi signal in part of the home
  • One device or application using a large amount of internet capacity

Things you can safely try

  1. Test another device — If several phones and computers are slow at the same time, the problem may be with the internet internet connection or router. If only one device is slow, focus on that device first.
  2. Restart the router — Unplug the router and modem if they are separate, wait about 30 seconds, and reconnect them. Give them several minutes to fully restart before testing.
  3. Test near the router — If the internet is much faster close to the router than in another room, you may have a Wi-Fi coverage problem rather than a problem with the internet service itself.
  4. Pause heavy activity — Streaming, large downloads, cloud backups, and multiple video calls can use significant internet capacity. Temporarily pause them and see whether normal browsing improves.
  5. Check whether the problem affects the whole home — If every device remains slow after a restart, contact your internet provider. Ask whether there is an outage or service problem before changing advanced settings.
