Why Does Wi-Fi Work in One Room but Not Another?
Wi-Fi signal gets weaker as it travels through distance, walls, floors, and other obstacles. A connection that works near the router may be unreliable elsewhere.
What’s happening?
Wi-Fi can be strong in one part of your home and weak in another.
Distance from the router, walls, floors, furniture, and other sources of interference can affect the wireless signal.
Common causes
- Router is far from the affected room
- Thick walls or floors
- Router is placed in a poor location
- Wireless interference
- Router needs to be restarted
- Problem with one particular device
Things you can safely try
- Test the Wi-Fi near the router.
- Test the same device in both locations.
- Check several rooms.
- Consider moving the router.
- Restart the router.
- Try another device in the affected room.
If it works well there but not in the other room, coverage may be the problem.
This helps determine whether the problem follows the device or the location.
If only one area has weak Wi-Fi, coverage is more likely to be involved.
A more central, open location may improve coverage.
A normal restart can clear temporary problems.
If several devices have the same problem, the room's Wi-Fi coverage may be the issue.
Stop here
Don't immediately buy a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system until you're sure weak coverage is the problem.
If Wi-Fi is slow everywhere, the problem may be with your internet service or router instead.
Do not buy an extender automatically. Poor router placement, an internet-service issue, or an incorrectly configured network may be the real problem.
