How Do I Set Up a New Tablet?

A new tablet can feel like a lot at first. You can set it up one step at a time.

What’s happening?

Most tablets ask you to choose a language, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to an account, install updates, and set up security.

Common setup problems

  • The tablet is not connected to Wi-Fi
  • The account password is not available
  • Updates have not been installed
  • Photos or contacts have not been transferred
  • The tablet's security settings are not finished

Things you can safely try

  1. Turn on the tablet and follow the setup screens. Choose the correct language and region.
  2. Connect to your home Wi-Fi using the current network password.
  3. Sign in with the account you normally use with the tablet. Do not give the password to another person.
  4. Install normal system updates when the tablet offers them. Keep it connected to power if an update takes a while.
  5. Set a screen lock such as a PIN, passcode, or fingerprint if the tablet supports it.
  6. Move your contacts, photos, and other needed files using the tablet's normal transfer or backup options.
