Is This Microsoft Virus Warning Real?
You may see a pop-up claiming that Microsoft detected a virus or that your computer is infected.
What’s happening?
You may see a pop-up claiming that Microsoft detected a virus or that your computer is infected.
How these scams work
- A web page can show a fake Microsoft warning.
- A real security message may be mixed up with a scam pop-up.
- Scammers use urgent language to make people call, pay, or install software.
Some legitimate security software can display warnings, but unexpected pop-ups that tell you to call a phone number are a common type of tech-support scam.
Microsoft does not normally need to call you unexpectedly because your computer supposedly has a virus.
Common warning signs
Be especially cautious if the pop-up:
- Tells you your computer is infected
- Makes loud sounds or repeatedly displays warnings
- Tells you to call a phone number
- Tells you not to turn off your computer
- Asks you to give someone remote access
- Requests payment to "fix" the computer
- Asks for passwords or verification codes
What you should do
- Don't call the number shown in the pop-up.
- Don't give the caller remote access to your computer.
- Don't provide passwords, verification codes, or payment information.
- If possible, close the browser window or pop-up without clicking suspicious buttons.
- If you're unsure whether the warning is legitimate, stop and get help before calling anyone.
A browser pop-up can claim almost anything. The appearance of a Microsoft logo or warning does not prove the message is from Microsoft.
Stop here
If the warning won't go away, the computer is behaving unusually, or you're unsure what you're seeing, don't keep clicking through the message.
Don't download software or allow remote access because a pop-up tells you to.
