Is This Google Security Warning Real?
A message with Google's name can look very serious. Some Google warnings are real. Others are fake messages made by scammers.
Online Safety
A warning that appears to come from Google can look convincing, especially when it says your account, phone, or computer is at risk. The important thing is not to panic. Some Google security notices are legitimate, but unexpected browser pop-ups can also be designed to frighten you into calling a scammer or installing software.
What’s happening?
A message with Google's name can look very serious. Some Google warnings are real. Others are fake messages made by scammers.
The most important thing is not to panic. A scary message does not mean you must act right away.
How these scams work
A real Google alert may appear when Google notices a sign-in or security problem.
A fake warning may appear in a web page. It may tell you to call a phone number, download a program, or give someone your password or security code.
What you should do
- Do not call the number in the warning. A phone number in a pop-up is not proof that the message is from Google.
- Do not give out your password or security code. Google will not need you to read a one-time security code to a stranger on the phone.
- Close the web page if you can. Do not download a program just because a pop-up tells you your computer is infected.
- Check your Google account another way. Open your normal Google or Gmail app, or type the Google website address yourself. Do not use the link in the warning.
- Look for real account alerts. If Google shows a security notice after you sign in normally, read it there. Follow the instructions shown in your account.
- Get help if you are unsure. Take a photo of the warning before closing it. A trusted person can help you decide what it means.
Stop here
Stop if the message asks you to pay money, install remote-access software, share a password, or read a security code to someone.
Do not let a pop-up rush you into a decision. You can close it and check your account another way.
