What’s happening?

A webpage can display a frightening message that looks like an Apple security alert, but a warning shown inside a browser does not automatically mean your iPhone, iPad, or Mac has a virus.

Fake warnings are often designed to look official. They may use Apple logos, urgent language, a loud sound, a countdown, or a phone number and tell you to call someone immediately.

Common causes

  • A scam webpage: A website can display a fake virus or security warning and make it look like an Apple alert.
  • Misleading advertising: Some ads can send you to pages that use alarming messages to get your attention.
  • Browser notifications: A website may have been allowed to send notifications that look like security warnings.
  • An unexpected phone call or message: Someone may use the warning as a reason to contact you and ask for money, passwords, verification codes, or remote access.

Things you can safely try

  1. Do not call the phone number in the warning. An unexpected pop-up is not a trustworthy place to get Apple support. Do not use its phone number, payment instructions, or contact information.
  2. Do not give anyone your password or security code. Never provide sensitive account information just because a warning says you must do so immediately.
  3. Do not install remote-access software because of the warning. If a pop-up tells you to install an app or give someone control of your device, stop and close the page instead.
  4. Close the webpage. On an iPhone or iPad, use the normal browser controls to close the tab. On a Mac, close the browser window or tab normally. If the page is difficult to close, quit the browser using the device’s normal controls rather than following instructions on the warning.
  5. Do not pay to remove a “virus” because of a pop-up. If you already entered payment information or sent money, contact your financial institution promptly using a trusted phone number or website you find yourself.
  6. Get help through an official Apple channel. If you are still concerned about your device or Apple Account, go to Apple’s official website or use Apple’s normal support options rather than information supplied by the warning.
