Why Is My Computer Storage Full?
If your computer says it is low on storage, the problem is usually not that the computer has suddenly lost space. Photos, videos, downloads, apps, backups, and temporary files can gradually fill the drive. The goal is to find what is using the space before deleting anything important.
What’s happening?
Your storage drive is where Windows and your files live. When it gets close to full, the computer may become slower and some updates or programs may have trouble working.
Common causes
- Photos and videos, especially large recordings
- A Downloads folder that has built up over time
- Unused programs or games
- Temporary files and old update files
- Cloud files or backups stored on the computer
- A small drive that simply does not have much free space
Things you can safely try
- Open your computer’s storage settings and see which categories are using the most space.
- Review Downloads and remove files you recognize and no longer need.
- Empty the Recycle Bin only after checking that it does not contain anything you may want back.
- Uninstall programs you recognize and no longer use. Do not remove programs just because you do not recognize the name.
- Move important photos and documents to a trusted backup or external drive before deleting large collections.
Stop here
Stop before deleting Windows folders, system files, unfamiliar program folders, or files you are not sure about. If the drive is still nearly full after removing obvious personal files, the safest next step is to have the computer checked rather than guessing what can be deleted.
