Is My Computer Infected With a Virus?
Seeing pop-ups, unfamiliar programs, or strange browser behavior does not automatically mean your computer has a virus. Some warnings are real security alerts, while others are designed to scare you into calling a fake support number or installing something dangerous.
What’s happening?
A virus is a harmful program. It can cause your computer to act in strange ways.
Not every computer problem is a virus. A slow computer, pop-up, or error can have many causes.
Common causes
Common signs include pop-ups you did not expect, programs you do not recognize, a changed web browser, or security warnings that keep coming back.
Some warnings are real. Others are made to scare you into calling a number, paying money, or giving away your information.
Things you can safely try
- Do not click a scary pop-up. If a message tells you to call a number or pay money, do not follow its instructions.
- Close the web page. If you can close the browser normally, do that. Do not install anything the pop-up tells you to install.
- Look at programs you recognize. If you recently installed a program you do not trust, do not open it again. Do not delete important system files.
- Run your normal security check. Use the security software that came with your computer or one you already trust. Keep it updated.
- Restart the computer. A normal restart can clear some temporary problems. If the problem returns, write down what you see.
- Get help if the warning keeps returning. Bring the exact message or a photo of the screen. This can help identify the problem without guessing.
