Computer Problems
How Do I Know If My Computer Needs to Be Replaced?
A slow or troublesome computer does not always need to be replaced. A few signs can help you decide whether repair is worth it.
What’s happening?
Older computers can slow down because of software, storage, heat, or hardware wear. Sometimes a small repair can add useful years to a computer.
Common causes
- The computer is very old for the software you need
- The computer has repeated hardware failures
- The battery or storage is failing
- The computer cannot run important current software
- Repair costs are becoming too high
Things you can safely try
- Write down the main problems. Separate one-time problems from issues that happen again and again.
- Check whether the computer has enough free storage. Low storage can make a computer feel much slower.
- Install normal operating-system updates if the computer supports them.
- Think about what you actually need the computer to do. Email and web browsing need less power than newer games or demanding work.
- Compare the likely repair cost with the cost of a replacement that meets your needs.
- Back up important files before making a repair-or-replace decision. A backup protects your files if the computer fails.
Stop here
Do not throw away or reset an old computer before your important files are backed up. If you are unsure whether a repair or replacement makes more sense, get a diagnosis first.
