How these scams work

Remote access can be useful when you intentionally ask a trusted technician for help. However, an unexpected person asking for remote access is a major warning sign.

Common warning signs

Be cautious if someone unexpectedly:

What you should do

  1. Don't install remote-access software because of an unexpected call, email, or pop-up.
  2. Don't give an unexpected caller a remote-access code.
  3. Don't allow someone you don't trust to control your computer.
  4. If you need technical help, contact a trusted technician using contact information you found independently.
  5. If you already allowed remote access, disconnect from the session if you can safely do so and stop communicating with the person.

STOP — Be Careful

If someone is pressuring you to give them control of your computer, stop.

Don't provide passwords, verification codes, banking information, or payment information.

If you already gave someone remote access, avoid using the computer for sensitive activities until it can be checked and get help securing your computer and important accounts.
