Why Aren’t My Keyboard or Mouse Working?
Learn what to check when a keyboard or mouse stops responding on a Windows computer, including wired, wireless, and battery-powered devices.
What’s happening?
Your keyboard or mouse may stop responding because of a connection problem, low battery, Bluetooth issue, USB problem, or computer software issue.
Common causes
- Loose USB connection
- Dead or low batteries
- Wireless receiver problem
- Bluetooth connection problem
- Windows or software issue
- Damaged keyboard, mouse, or cable
- Problem with a USB port
Things you can safely try
- Check whether the computer itself is responding.
- Check the connection.
- Check the batteries.
- Check the power switch.
- Check the wireless receiver.
- Try another USB port.
- Restart the computer.
If the screen and other controls work normally, the problem may be limited to the keyboard or mouse.
For a wired device, make sure the USB cable is firmly connected.
For a wireless keyboard or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries if needed.
Some wireless devices have a small power switch on the bottom.
If your keyboard or mouse uses a USB receiver, make sure it is connected securely.
If the device is wired or uses a USB receiver, another port may help.
A normal restart can clear a temporary software problem.
Stop here
If multiple USB devices stop working, a USB port appears damaged, or the computer has other serious problems, stop before making advanced changes.
Do not force a USB connector or open the device to repair internal electronics. If both keyboard and mouse stop working at the same time, the computer may have a larger issue.
