Why Won’t My Bluetooth Device Connect?
Learn how to troubleshoot Bluetooth headphones, speakers, keyboards, mice, and other devices when they will not connect.
What’s happening?
Bluetooth allows devices such as headphones, speakers, keyboards, mice, and cars to connect wirelessly to your phone, tablet, or computer.
Sometimes a Bluetooth device won't connect, won't stay connected, or connects to the wrong device.
Common causes
- Bluetooth is turned off
- The device has a low battery
- The devices are too far apart
- The Bluetooth device isn't in pairing mode
- The device is already connected to another nearby device
- An old Bluetooth connection is causing a problem
- The phone, tablet, or computer needs to be restarted
- The Bluetooth device needs an update
Things you can safely try
- Make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
- Make sure both devices have enough battery.
- Move the devices close together.
- Put the Bluetooth device into pairing mode according to its instructions.
- Check whether it is already connected to another nearby phone, tablet, or computer.
- Restart both devices.
- If the device was previously connected, remove the old Bluetooth connection and pair it again.
Stop here
If the device repeatedly refuses to connect after these basic steps, don't keep changing advanced Bluetooth settings without knowing what they do.
If the device is damaged or won't power on, it may need repair or replacement.
Only remove a saved pairing if you know you can pair the device again. Do not install an unknown “Bluetooth repair” program or app because of a pop-up.
