I Accidentally Deleted My Pictures. Can They Be Recovered?
Deleted pictures are sometimes recoverable. Before trying complicated recovery tools, check the places where your phone, computer, or photo service may have kept another copy.
What’s happening?
Deleting a picture does not always mean it is immediately gone forever. Phones, computers, and cloud photo services may place deleted pictures in a temporary Recently Deleted, Trash, or similar folder. A backup may also contain another copy.
The safest approach is to check those places first. If the pictures are important and you cannot find another copy, avoid making unnecessary changes to the device until you decide what to do next.
Common causes
- The picture is still in Recently Deleted or Trash
- A cloud photo service has a copy
- The picture is included in a computer or external-drive backup
- The picture was permanently deleted and no backup exists
- New data may have been written to the storage after deletion
Things you can safely try
- Check Recently Deleted or Trash first. Look in the photo app on your phone or computer for a folder with a name such as Recently Deleted, Recently Removed, or Trash. If you find the picture, use the app’s normal recovery option.
- Check your cloud photo service. If you use a service such as iCloud Photos, Google Photos, OneDrive, or another service you intentionally set up, check it through the official app or website. Make sure you are signed in to the account that normally stores your pictures.
- Check your other devices. A computer, tablet, old phone, or external drive may contain a copy. Look for the picture before moving, deleting, or reorganizing other files.
- Check backups you know you created. If you intentionally back up your computer or phone, see whether the missing pictures are included. Do not erase or replace the backup while you are trying to recover the pictures.
- Stop unnecessary use if the pictures are irreplaceable. If the pictures were stored locally and are not in a trash folder or backup, avoid taking lots of new pictures, downloading large files, or installing photo recovery program. New data can sometimes overwrite deleted data.
Stop here
If the pictures are irreplaceable and you cannot find them in Recently Deleted, Trash, another device, or a known backup, stop before trying advanced recovery steps.
Do not factory-reset the device, format a storage drive, or install an unfamiliar recovery program just because a website or pop-up recommends it. Those actions can make recovery harder or create a security problem.
