Why Won’t My Computer Turn On?
When a computer will not turn on, first determine whether it has no power at all or whether it powers on but is not displaying anything. Those are different problems and require different checks.
What’s happening?
When a computer will not turn on, the problem may be as simple as a power connection or charger. It can also be caused by a battery, power supply, display, or hardware problem.
Common causes
- Power cable is loose
- Outlet or power strip problem
- Laptop charger problem
- Dead laptop battery
- Hardware problem
- Computer turns on but the screen stays black
Things you can safely try
- Check the power connection.
- Try the outlet.
- If it is a laptop, connect the charger.
- Look for signs of power.
Make sure the power cable is firmly connected to the computer and outlet.
If possible, check whether the outlet works with another device.
Make sure the charger is firmly connected and give the computer some time to charge.
Check for lights, sounds, or fans.
- If the computer seems to turn on but the screen stays black, the problem may be with the display rather than the computer's power.
- Disconnect unnecessary accessories.
Remove USB devices and other accessories, then try starting the computer again.
Stop here
If you smell burning, see smoke, hear unusual electrical sounds, or notice a swollen laptop battery, stop using the computer and disconnect power if it is safe to do so.
Do not open or attempt to repair a damaged battery or power supply yourself.
