Why Does My Computer Keep Restarting?

If your computer restarts by itself, the cause could be a Windows update, overheating, a software or driver problem, power trouble, or failing hardware. The pattern of the restart is an important clue.

What’s happening?

An unexpected restart means the computer is shutting down and starting again without you choosing to restart it. Sometimes that happens during a normal Windows update. Other times, a crash or hardware problem can cause the computer to restart.

Pay attention to when the restart happens. A computer that restarts only during one program may have a software problem, while restarts that happen during startup, when the computer gets hot, or under heavier use may point to a different cause.

Common causes

Things you can safely try

  1. Let an update finish if Windows says one is installing. Avoid turning the computer off repeatedly while Windows is clearly completing an update.
  2. Restart normally once. If you can reach the Windows desktop, use the normal Restart option rather than holding the power button down.
  3. Check whether the computer is unusually hot. Make sure air vents are not blocked and place a laptop on a hard, flat surface while using it.
  4. Disconnect unnecessary USB devices. If the restarts began after connecting a new device or accessory, disconnect it safely and see whether the behavior changes.
  5. Notice what happens immediately before the restart. Write down any error message, blue screen, program, update, or other event that appears first.
  6. If the computer stays usable, back up important files. Protect important documents and pictures before doing more extensive basic checks, especially if the restarts are becoming more frequent.
