Why Won’t My Computer Connect to Wi-Fi?
When a computer will not connect to Wi-Fi, first determine whether the problem is limited to the computer. If phones and other devices work normally, focus on the computer.
What’s happening?
When a computer will not connect to Wi-Fi, first determine whether the problem is limited to the computer. If phones and other devices work normally, focus on the computer. If everything is offline, the router or internet connection is more likely to be involved.
Common causes
- Wi-Fi is turned off or Airplane Mode is enabled
- The wrong wireless network is selected
- An old saved password is being used
- The computer is too far from the router
- The router or internet service is having trouble
Things you can safely try
- Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and Airplane Mode is off.
- Check that you are selecting your own Wi-Fi network and entering its current password.
- Try connecting near the router to rule out a weak signal.
- Check another device. If everything is offline, restart the router using its normal power-cycle procedure.
- Restart the computer and try the connection again.
- If the computer connects to other Wi-Fi networks but not yours, the saved network information or router settings may need attention.
Stop here
Avoid changing advanced adapter or router settings unless you know what they do. If the problem continues after these basic checks, getting help can be safer than deleting drivers or changing network configuration at random.
