Scams & Online Safety
How Do I Protect My Online Accounts?
A few simple habits can make your online accounts much harder for scammers to take over.
What’s happening?
Your important accounts may contain personal information, money, photos, or messages. Protecting them starts with strong sign-in habits.
Why account protection matters
- Using the same password on many accounts
- Sharing passwords or security codes
- Clicking unexpected sign-in links
- Leaving old accounts unsecured
- Ignoring account security alerts
Practical steps you can take
- Use a different password for each important account. A password manager can help you keep track of them.
- Turn on two-factor authentication when the account offers it. This adds another check after your password.
- Never give a password or one-time security code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- For a sign-in or security message, open the normal app or type the website address yourself. Do not rely on a link in an unexpected message.
- Review recent sign-ins or devices in important accounts. Remove access you do not recognize when the service gives you a safe way to do so.
- Keep your phone, computer, browser, and important apps updated through their normal update tools.
Stop here
Stop if someone pressures you to act quickly, asks for a password or security code, or asks you to install remote-access software. A real support person should not need you to hand over your private sign-in information.
