Why Won’t My Phone Charge?
Your phone may not charge at all, may charge very slowly, or may only charge when the cable is positioned a certain way.
What’s happening?
Your phone may not charge at all, may charge very slowly, or may only charge when the cable is positioned a certain way.
The problem could involve the charger, cable, outlet, charging port, software, or battery.
Common causes
- Damaged charging cable
- Faulty charging adapter
- Problem with the electrical outlet
- Dirt or debris in the charging port
- Damaged charging port
- Software problem
- Aging or damaged battery
Things you can safely try
- Try a different electrical outlet.
- Try a different charging cable and adapter that you know work properly.
- Look at the charging port with a light.
If you see debris, don't force anything into the port or use a metal object to clean it.
- Restart the phone.
- If the battery is completely drained, leave the phone connected to a working charger for a while before trying to turn it on.
- If your phone supports wireless charging, you can try a compatible wireless charger.
If wireless charging works while the charging port does not, the port may be part of the problem.
Stop here
Stop using the phone and charger if the phone is:
- Swollen
- Extremely hot
- Leaking
- Producing an unusual smell
- Showing signs of serious physical damage
Don't puncture, squeeze, open, or attempt to repair a swollen or damaged battery.
If known-good chargers don't work or the charging port appears damaged, professional help may be needed.
